Does the photo go to a server?

No. Only the model files are fetched from our R2 bucket. Inference runs in WebGPU when the browser has it, otherwise WASM on the CPU.

Will this match remove.bg?

No. remove.bg is a cloud product with studio-grade edges on many photos. You get an on-device subject matte that is strong on clear subjects and weaker on hair, glass, and foliage.

Why is the first run slow?

The model pack downloads once, then stays cached. WebGPU is faster than the CPU fallback. After that, each photo stays on-device.

What is the size cap?

16 megapixels. Larger files are rejected so the tab does not run out of memory. On phones, photos above about 8 megapixels are fitted first so Chrome does not crash. Downscale with Resize Image first if you need a cutout from a huge original.

What if the cutout is wrong?

Use Touch up to erase leftover background or restore parts the model removed. If the model fails, the original stays and you can erase by hand.

Is Remove Background private?

Everything runs locally in your browser. Your files are never uploaded to StackImage servers.

Do I need an account to use Remove Background?

No. StackImage is free to use without signing up or creating an account.

Does Remove Background work offline?

After the page and libraries load, processing happens on your device. A connection is only needed to load the app the first time (Enhance tools also need a one-time model download).

Clear portraits and products usually look good. Flyaway hair, wine glasses, and trees often need a pass with Touch up on this page.

Compared with remove.bg and Photopea

Use remove.bg when the edge has to be perfect and you accept an upload. Use Photopea or a desktop editor when you need a refined mask. Use StackImage when the photo should not leave the machine and a clean-enough PNG is enough.

There is no account, no credit pack, and no server-side queue. The tradeoff is quality and speed on low-end devices.

When not to use this tool

Skip it for legal-id photos, complex group shots, or anything that needs a guaranteed hair matte. Do not treat a failed edge as “good enough” if you will print the result.

Keep the original. If inference fails or the edge is poor, the source stays in the workspace.
